What we do
Intellectual Property
What you create is the heart of your business. It's worth protecting.
Whether you're a consultant or an artist, a gym owner or an event coordinator, we help you understand who owns what, what that actually means, and how to navigate relationships and transactions in a way that clearly and fairly sets out the rights and responsibilities of everyone involved.
From service agreements to talent releases, content licensing to end user license agreements, we focus on helping you build positive relationships and increasing your understanding of the laws that impact the day-to-day operations of your business.
Contracts
A good contract shouldn't need a lawyer to decode it.
We draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements that are clear, practical, and in your favour.
Whether you're engaging a supplier or taking on a client, formalising a partnership or entering into confidential discussions, we make sure you know exactly what you're signing up for.
Technology
Tech moves fast and the legal side often gets left behind or chucked into the "too hard" basket.
Whether you're buying, selling or developing software, integrating AI tools into your business, or handling sensitive data, we help you put the right agreements in place so you're clear on what you have to do and what you're owed from the start, and so you're prepared if something goes wrong.
From AI use policies to cybersecurity obligations, SaaS terms to privacy advice, we help you stay ahead of the risks that come with operating in a digital environment.
Policies
Your terms and conditions, privacy policy, and risk waiver do more than tick a compliance box. They set expectations, limit your liability, and even reflect your brand. We draft policies that are legally sound, actually readable, and are aligned with your brand.
Internal policies for your employees are equally important. We help you set out the unwritten rules you have in your head (social media, AI use, bullying and harassment, work hours and breaks, and much more) and align them with relevant laws so you're covered and everyone feels confident and safe in your workplace.
Our approach
Be heard and understood
We take the time to understand who you are, where you're going, and what you need.
Practical and commercial
Real-world documents and advice, grounded in how your business operates and what you're trying to achieve.
Straight to the point
Skip the nothwithstandings, hereinafters, and thereunders. We say what we mean.
About Banksii Legal
Banksii Legal is a commercial legal practice based in Lutruwita, Tasmania.
Founded on the theory that people are far less likely to end up in court if they're clear on and happy with their rights and responsibilities from the start, Banksii Legal takes a human-centric approach to legal services.
We believe that, fundamentally, contracts are about relationships. A well-written contract shouldn't be a labyrinth of conditional text with traps in the fine print. It should be a clear record of your intentions and needs.
We believe that clear is kind, and kind is good business. We apply this philosophy to our fees too: with a transparent mix of fixed fees and hourly billing, you'll always know where you stand.
Meet Sarah
Founder & Principal
Sarah has a dog, a cat, two chickens, a young family, and a brain that rarely stops. She also happens to be a lawyer, which is probably why you're here.
Sarah founded Banksii Legal after a number of years setting up and running the legal function for an internationally successful Australian software company, where she was awarded Sole Legal Officer of the Year by the Australian Association of Corporate Counsel in both 2024 and 2025.
Sarah loves working with people who make things and who help others do and be better. She always seeks to understand a business's journey, culture, and overarching objectives, and what makes its employees and clients tick.
A passionate advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and the rights of creators, Sarah is working towards a PhD on Indigenous cultural and intellectual property and AI, and frequently speaks publicly about neurodiversity.
Outside being a legal beagle, Sarah's hobbies include nature photography, running, CrossFit, fantasy novels, exceptionally niche science and history podcasts, and writing about herself in the third person.
